GreenCityRisingisanethnographicaccountofcollectiveorganizingforenvironmentaljusticeinaneraofgrowingconcernaboutenvironmentalandclimatechallenges.Theconventionalsustainabilityparadigmpromisesimprovedenvironmentalconditionsforall,suchasfreshairandcleanwater,walkableandbikeableneighborhoods,greenspaceaccess,andprotectionfromclimatecrises.Yet,withoutparticularinterventions,thepursuitofsuchenvironmentalamenitiesoftencontributestodisplacementandfurtherharmforcommunitiesthathavehistoricallybornethebruntoflandtheft,racialcapitalism,andtoxicindustries.DrawingontheworkofanallianceofgrassrootsorganizationscalledthePortlandHarborCommunityCoalition(PHCC),ErinGoodlingshowshowcommunitieshavecometogetheracrosslinesofraceandclasstoworkforamorejust,greenfutureinPortland,Oregon.GreenCityRisingrevealsthattheviolenceofsettlercolonialismandwhitesupremacyarefarfromendpoints:acollectivevisionforabetterfutureisemerging,andordinarypeoplearebuildingtheunderstanding,skills,andrelationshipsnecessarytousheritin.
